The Appalachian School of Law invites applications from entry-level and lateral candidates for a full-time faculty position. The position
may be filled on either a tenure-track or continuing-contract basis. We will consider applicants with interests and/or experience in a wide
variety of subjects, but are particularly interested in applicants with experience in civil litigation, constitutional law, alternative
dispute resolution, natural resources law, legal writing, and/or an interest in clinical teaching, focusing on legal issues endemic to
Appalachia.
Candidates should have a Juris Doctor (or higher) degree. Candidates with relevant experience in private practice,
government service, or judicial clerkships are encouraged to apply; in fact, most of our faculty have significant practice experience.
Active law licensure in Virginia and/or Tennessee is a plus. Candidates should have a desire to advise and teach a student body which is
diverse with respect to socio-economic status, culture, and career paths. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job.
We would encourage you to apply for a faculty position at ASL even if you don’t meet every one of our preferred
qualifications.
To apply: Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and three references by email
to personnel@asl.edu.
ASL will review applications as they are
received and applicants should submit all materials on or before June 15, 2024 for priority consideration.
About
ASL:
ASL exists to provide an opportunity for people from Appalachia and beyond to realize their dreams of practicing law
and bettering their communities. We attract a qualified, diverse and dedicated student body, many of whom will remain in the region after
graduation and serve as legal counselors, advocates, judges, mediators, community leaders, and public officials. We offer a nationally
recruited, diverse, and well-qualified faculty, a rigorous program for the professional training of lawyers, and a comprehensive law
library. The program emphasizes professional responsibility, dispute resolution, and practice skills, with specialties in natural resources
law and criminal law. The ASL community is an exciting, student-centered environment that emphasizes honesty, integrity, fairness, and
respect for others. We also emphasize community service and provide a resource for people, the Bar, courts, and other institutions of the
region.
At Appalachian School of Law, we believe in investing in our faculty members for the long term. We offer competitive
compensation, comprehensive benefits, professional development opportunities, and a supportive infrastructure to help you start and thrive
in your career.
