ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LAW (TENURE TRACK)

Willamette University College of Law anticipates hiring at least one full-time entry-level Tenure Track faculty member to begin in Fall 2025. We are open to all areas of expertise and are especially interested in individuals who can teach Torts, Professional Responsibility, Employment Law, Labor Law, ADR and Client Counseling, Environmental and Natural Resources Law, and Evidence. A commitment to experiential and simulation-based learning is a plus. Applicants must possess strong academic credentials, a commitment to scholarship, and the skills necessary to communicate their expertise to colleagues and their students. Willamette University is a small, highly selective private university of 2500 students with campuses in Salem and Portland, Oregon. Its undergraduate and graduate programs include the College of Law, the College of Arts and Sciences, Atkinson Graduate School of Management, the School of Computing and Information Sciences, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. The College of Law is located on the University’s main Salem campus, across the street from the State Capitol, Supreme Court, and State administrative offices. We are especially interested in applicants who are excited to live in the Willamette Valley, Portland, Salem, or the Pacific Northwest region.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of significance:

• Teach two courses each semester, which includes providing classroom instruction, timely written feedback on assignments, and individual academic counseling on progress towards course learning objectives.
• Work closely with students inside and outside of the classroom, while maintaining professionalism and appropriate demeanor that encourages learning and student professional development.
• Participate in the creation of scholarship at a national level in a subject area of the candidate’s chosen field of study by (among other things) researching and producing written works of scholarship as well as presenting and participating in remote and (as available) in-person conferences and presentations.
• Engage in assigned and voluntary service work with University and College of Law committees regarding curriculum, faculty governance, academic standards, student life, or other matters.

Minimum Qualifications

• Law degree required.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Enthusiasm for legal scholarship and participation in the academic life of the College of Law.
• Enthusiasm for student success, and an ability to be empathetic towards students with academic challenges.
• Excellent organizational and planning skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues.
• Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with staff, faculty, students and professionals in the community regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, economic status, ethnicity, job status, or other background.
• Ability to work in a manner that furthers equity and diversity and that brings to campus a commitment to sharing varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.
• Competence in the use of computer for word processing and electronic communication.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior published scholarship in the candidate’s area of interest.
• Teaching experience at an ABA-Accredited Law School
• Prior experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law, including being licensed in the Oregon State Bar and/or having the ability to waive into the Oregon State Bar under reciprocity rules.
• Demonstrated interest in experiential education or an interest in developing and teaching simulation-based courses.

Typical Work Schedule

Monday -Friday, 8am to 5pm; occasionally later if classes or service obligations are scheduled in the evenings (which may occasionally happen in consultation with the relevant Dean).
