Job Description:
The Department of English and Humanities at Farmingdale State College (FSC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Humanities beginning fall 2025. The area of specialization (AOS) for this position is open, though successful candidates should have areas of competency (AOC) that enable them to teach across the department’s philosophy curriculum. The department’s philosophy curriculum can be viewed by visiting, FSC Courses and filtering for philosophy. This selected candidate will have the opportunity to develop new courses in their area of specialization, areas that speak to the college’s broader needs, and especially areas that contribute SUNY’s DEISJ initiative.
The Department of English and Humanities at Farmingdale State College is an interdisciplinary service department that houses faculty who specialize in composition, speech communication, literature, and philosophy. As a service department, English and Humanities offers no major, instead offering foundational classes and electives that interweave with courses of study across the college. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the department, we will give special consideration to candidates who demonstrate ability and/or desire to work across disciplines and contribute to department life holistically. Candidates should also demonstrate clear commitment to teaching excellence in Philosophy and the Humanities. Experience teaching classes in relevant fields outside of philosophy is preferred, but not required.
The course load for this position is 12 credit hours (4 classes) per semester, in addition to service and research obligations. All faculty members at Farmingdale State College have three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity, and service. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in teaching. Candidates should have a research agenda that complements their area of academic specialty resulting in peer-reviewed publications and presentation, both of which are necessary for promotion and tenure at Farmingdale State College. The service component of the workload includes student advisement as well as active participation on departmental, school and college-wide committees.
In your cover letter, we ask that you highlight your teaching and service experience in addition to research. As well, please articulate how you see these experiences fitting within the intellectual life of an interdisciplinary humanities department.
The college particularly welcomes candidates with knowledge, skills and abilities that include:
